alpacaes
We shear our alpacas in April each year. The yield per animal varies. The prime blanket , which is the portion of the fleece that is most desirable, usually weighs between 2 and 5 lbs. Typically, the finest alpaca fleece comes from younger animals. At alpacaEstore, we select only our very best fleeces to process into yarn for you.
The alpacas look like this when they are in full fleece (just before shearing):

And look like this after they have been sheared:

Alpacas come in 22 natural colors, and many variations of those colors. All of our yarns are made from our alpacas, raised here in north east Ohio. Our herd is comprised of animals who represent all of these color groups from true black and silver gray, through the browns and fawns, to the lights and whites.
We locally raise our animals, and work with mini mills within the USA, that specialize in alpaca fiber. We are able to customize our yarn runs. Some of our yarns are made from one single alpaca's fleece, some yarns are blends of 2 or more alpacas. Some yarn runs have a heathered effect, and some runs are twists with contrasting colors. The majority of our yarn is either 2, 3 or 4 ply (strands twisted together). Each run is typically put up in 200 yard skeins. Each skein weighs anywhere from 3.0oz - 4.0oz. We get 6-20 skeins from each yarn run, depending on how many fleeces we have selected. Each run becomes the dyelot for that specific yarn.
Each yarn run is unique. When purchasing our yarns, try to buy enough for your entire project from the same lot. Each yarn run is extemely difficult to repeat.
